From the Desk of Dr. Kent

When I first got involved in TMS treatment, I was a little skeptical. I could see the research data that showed efficacy. But in the back of my mind, it seemed too good to be true. How could these invisible pulses of electromagnetic energy alter the brain in a positive way? I had seen people peddling magnets in the past, but much of that was associated with multilevel marketing.

Becoming a Deep TMS Believer

My mindset was tainted. But as I began to see patients go through treatment and respond positively, I became a believer. Since early 2017, I’ve been using a second generation device by Brainsway. It uses the only patented transcranial magnetic coil in the industry. It penetrates deeper and more broadly than the older, unpatented figure 8 coils that are currently more widespread and well known in the market. That is why it is referred to as deep TMS. When I saw the data for deep TMS, I knew that was the direction I needed to go. I have now treated over 21 patients (some are just starting) with this new technology and I’m glad I took this step. The results I’m seeing have exceeded my expectations. I’m seeing patients go into full remission from their depression who in some cases have had lifelong symptoms lasting decades, unresponsive to traditional treatment. Other patients are getting a 50% reduction in their symptoms and are considered responders. Out of 17 patients that have entered deep TMS that have been going for at least several weeks at Treasure Valley TMS, 9 (53%) have gone into remission, 6 (35%) responders, 1 partial responder and 1 non responder.

Gaining Perspective

To put it in perspective, the literature reports that 1 in 3 (33%) are expected to go into remission and 1 in 2 (50%) to have a response. (1) I have been pleasantly surprised by the results I’m seeing. Even more telling are the stories that these patients are relating. I’ve included a recent testimonial from Kelly, a nurse who has experienced lifelong depression who came in feeling skeptical and hopeless. I was extremely touched by her story. I’m so excited about the results that my deep TMS patients are getting. I’ve practiced psychiatry for 30+ years and have not seen anything quite like deep TMS. Seeing hopeless patients get incredible results is priceless.

To see if you are a candidate for deep TMS, take the self test included on my website.
